UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale has received a Blue Distinction® Center+ (BDC+) for Cardiac Care designation from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) as part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program. Blue Distinction Centers (BDC) are nationally designated providers with proven quality care and safe practices that lead to better patient outcomes.
Every 34 seconds, an American dies from cardiovascular disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The BDC+ for Cardiac Care designation empowers patients to choose in-network, affordable, quality cardiac care. To receive this title, healthcare facilities must meet quality and safety standards and demonstrate better cost-efficiency than other facilities.
BDCs must deliver safe and effective cardiac care for:
- Percutaneous coronary interventions
- Coronary artery bypass graft
- Aortic valve replacement
- Mitral valve replacement and repair
“This recognition demonstrates our commitment to providing the highest quality of cardiac care to our patients,” said UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale President and CEO Adam Maycock. “It is a credit to our physicians, nurses and other health care professionals in our cardiology department, who work tirelessly to not only provide our patients with the highest-quality care but also education and information that allows them to make informed decisions about their treatment options. With our blend of caring and quality, we’re proud to offer our patients and community the highest level of care available.”
The BDC quality measures were developed from input from the medical community and leading accreditation and quality organizations. Only those healthcare facilities that first meet the quality measures for BDCs can receive designation as a Blue Distinction Center+.
“The hospitals that receive this important designation from BCBSIL demonstrate a strong commitment to quality and performance,” said Dr. Derek Robinson, BCBSIL chief medical officer. “This recognition shows that our members, employers, providers and communities can count on Blue Distinction Centers for access to healthcare that helps our members achieve their health goals.”
Nationally, BDCs for Cardiac Care provide quality patient care and have lower in-hospital mortality rates and bleeding complication rates for angioplasty than non-BDiCs. Designated facilities also meet additional national standards, with patients facing fewer readmissions and mortality rates for coronary artery bypass graft procedures and heart attacks than facilities that do not meet the criteria. Also, on average, BDC+ for Cardiac Care facilities are 21% more cost-efficient than their non-designation peers.
Since 2006, the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program has helped patients find quality specialty care in the areas of bariatric surgery, cancer care, cardiac care, cellular immunotherapy, fertility care, gene therapy, knee and hip replacements, maternity care, spine surgery, substance use treatment and recovery, and transplant care while encouraging healthcare professionals to improve the care they deliver.
