On Feb. 8, 2023, UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale celebrated its neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) renovation project with a special event that featured celebratory remarks and a thank you and recognition of donors. Donors also had the opportunity to write a message on a NICU wall, leaving well wishes and blessings for patients.
Designed for infants’ healthy development, private family bonding and patient safety, the updated NICU will provide a state-of-the-art healing environment for the hospital’s tiniest patients.
Donations to the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation, including a one-million-dollar gift from longtime philanthropist and community member Kay Birck, made the renovation possible. Birck, a former NICU nurse, and her husband Mike made a one-million-dollar gift to the hospital’s women and children’s unit in 1996.
“We are so grateful to Kay Birck and the contributions of all our donors,” said Hinsdale Hospital Foundation Board Chair Karen Fiascone. “Each person in this room tonight helped get this project off the ground. We couldn’t have gotten to this point without your support.”
“This is an exciting time for our hospital, community and team members. We couldn’t have considered this much-needed renovation without the support of our community, our foundation, and the transformational gift from the Birck family,” said UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale President and CEO Adam Maycock. “The new beautiful space will complement the expertise and outstanding quality of care provided by our NICU staff and physicians.”
During construction, the hospital will continue serving the most critical needs of infants across the region. The redesigned unit is scheduled for completion in late summer 2025.
