Therapeutic Support to Help Students Succeed
Our UChicago Medicine AdventHealth GlenOaks School and Transition Program offers individual and group therapies to our students with behavioral health challenges. To help students enhance their social and coping skills, our social workers and counselors use these and many other methods:
- Bibliotherapy, or book therapy, which uses reading materials as part of therapy
- Experiential role-playing and skill-building
- Video work and discussion
- Written work
Because therapy groups are sometimes together for an academic year or more, the groups can become a highly therapeutic and cohesive intervention in helping our students succeed through peer support and positive peer influence.

- Group Therapy

Most students participate in group therapy for the equivalent of 40 minutes per day. Groups tend to be highly structured and address behavioral health focus areas such as:
- Anger management
- Assertiveness
- Conflict resolution
- Healthy living
- Healthy relationships
- Independent living skills
- Social skills
- Stress management
- Individual Therapy
-
All UChicago Medicine AdventHealth GlenOaks School students have individual therapy at least once per week. This counseling for young adults is designed to provide your student with the necessary support for school success and assist them in achieving their Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals so they may transition to a less-structured setting when appropriate.
Many students develop a strong rapport with their therapists. Our therapists also serve as clinical team leaders, helping ensure the students' social and emotional needs are addressed throughout the program.
