Headache Care That Gives You Hope
- Understanding Why Headaches Happen
-
When it comes to headaches, how you feel on any given day can be impacted by many factors. Anxiety, caffeine, sinus pressure, dehydration, medications, certain meals and even the weather can cause that familiar ache to creep in. But if your pain is persistent or you have more than two headaches a week, it’s time to lean on us.
The first step is to start a headache diary, listing when you experience head pain, what the symptoms feel like and how long the pain lasts. Our neurologists will look at your recorded information and combine it with imaging tests like computed tomography (CT) scans, X-rays and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans to better understand what’s causing your pain and put you on a path to wellness.
- Common Headache Conditions We Treat
-
When you have a headache, it can be hard to focus on anything else. We want to help you figure out what’s going on and help you find relief.
We treat several different kinds of headaches, including:
- Cluster headaches: These are rare and come on suddenly, often accompanied by throbbing pain centered on one side of the head.
- Migraines: Intense, extended headaches that can come with nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound.
- Tension headaches: The most common type of headache, these may be occasional or chronic. Tension headaches cause mild to moderate pain that feels like a tight band around the head. Lack of sleep, missed meals, neck strain and stress are the typical culprits behind tension headaches.
In many cases, headaches result from different types of muscle tension. But if a sudden, severe headache begins or coincides with vision or speech issues, call 911 right away, as it could be a symptom of something bigger.
- Comprehensive Headache and Migraine Treatments
-
In most cases, you can find headache relief with the help of sleep, better hydration and over-the-counter pain relievers. But if you’re experiencing headaches more than twice a week or lasting for days, our UChicago Medicine AdventHealth neurologists want to help you find lasting comfort. For intense episodes, we may prescribe medication to ease your symptoms, including specific headache drugs or even antidepressants and anticonvulsants.
Since stress can worsen headaches, we’ll also give you the support you need for your mind and spirit. Our multidisciplinary team of counselors, dietitians and wellness experts can help you take control of your stress and make any needed nutrition or lifestyle changes. You may also benefit from biofeedback or specific relaxation training.
Whatever you need, we’ll create a personalized headache or migraine treatment plan to ease your mind, strengthen your body and relieve your pain.
