- The Difference Between Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia
-
The words dementia and Alzheimer’s are often used interchangeably, but they’re not the same. Dementia is a general term for symptoms of memory loss, and Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia.
The different types of dementia we can help treat include:
- Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia. It worsens progressively over time, takes years to develop and eventually requires full-time care.
- Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is related to abnormalities in the tau protein and can lead to changes in personality and behavior.
- Huntington’s disease is a genetic disorder that causes the brain and spinal cord to degenerate. Symptoms include jerky movements and personality changes.
- Lewy body dementia (LBD) is another common type of dementia caused by protein deposits in nerve cells that affect thinking, memory and motor control.
- Vascular dementia occurs after a heart attack or stroke and leads to incontinence and depression.
Whatever the diagnosis, we’re here to provide clarity and guidance for you and your loved ones, explaining what’s to come with transparency and compassion.

Memory loss can impact every area of your life and the lives of your loved ones. That’s why we take a comprehensive, whole-person — body, mind and spirit — approach to memory care.
The first step in your treatment plan may be medications to help slow memory loss and ease symptoms. We may connect you with therapists and counselors who can help improve your cognitive function and work to treat the root of the problem if an underlying condition causes your dementia. We’ll also help make life easier at home, providing home care services to help manage daily life and encourage rehabilitative, satisfying activities.
For many people, there is no way to prevent a dementia or Alzheimer’s diagnosis. However, there are lifestyle changes that have been shown to help prevent symptoms and slow disease progression. Healthy nutrition, mental activity, well-managed blood pressure and cholesterol levels and regular exercise have all been shown to help delay or prevent dementia.
Like you, we hope for a day when there’s a cure for dementia and Alzheimer’s. At UChicago Medicine AdventHealth, we invest in research and frequently uncover groundbreaking research and new therapies. Whether you or your loved one explores clinical trials or sticks to more traditional treatment methods, we’ll support and guide you with a nurturing touch at every step.
